"Nabucco" ist, nach Verdis eigenen Worten, die Oper, mit der seine künstlerische Laufbahn in Wahrheit begann. Durch "Nabucco" wurde Verdi mit einem Schlag berühmt. Die Uraufführung fand in Mailand 1842 statt. Der Chor der Gefangenen "Va pensiero sull'ali dorate" ("Flieg, Gedanke") wurde zum musikalischen Banner des italienischen "Risorgimento" (Untergrundbewegung gegen die Habsburger Herrschaft über Oberitalien) und blieb bis heute die heimliche Nationalhymne Italiens.
