Franz Schubert(1797-1828) was an Austrian composer working in the early Romantic era. First published in 1823, Die Nacht (D. 983c/Op. 17 No. 4) is scored for an unaccompanied four-part malechorus(TTBB), with words by Friedrich Wilhelm Krummacher. In this lyrical song, Schubert cleverly uses the expressive nature of the upper male range to serenade the beauty of the night.
