Das "Dresdner Requiem" durchlief mehrere Stadien: Entstanden 1947-48, wurde es mehrfach bis 1961 modifiziert und ergänzt. Mauersberger war bestrebt eine "evangelische Totenmesse [zu schreiben], wie sie die protestantische Kirche noch nicht besitzt." Mit diesem Werk sollte der Toten des Zweiten Weltkrieges und der Toten bei der Bombardierung Dresdens gedacht werden.
