op. 38
Encouraged by the success of his version of Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata recorded on CD with the soloist David Geringas, Heribert Breuer now presents another arrangement for the same instrumentation, namely the Cello Sonata No. 1 Op. 38 by Johannes Brahms. Due to its distinctly polyphonic texture, this composition which, with regard to the theme, falls back on Bach's Art of Fugue in the outer movements seemed ideal for fanning out the piano part to the sound spectrum of six rather varying instruments. Especially the fugue concluding the work evokes the impression of a 'chamber symphony' in which the compositional structure is much more vividly audible than is possible in the original version.
